The condition of a front suspension ball-joint in a motor vehicle is determined by raising the front of the vehicle in such. a manner as to unloac the. ball-joint and raise the from wheel into the air, applying a force to the wheel 19 to raise it further whilst maintaining the position of-the body 18 and quantitatively measuring the movement of the wheel 19 relative to the body 18. A device for measuring the movement of the wheel 19 comprises a graduated wheel-engaging bar 11 slidable against the resistance of a spring 12 in a tube 9 carrying a body-engaging element 10. A second wheel - engaging element 10 which slides against the resistance of a spring 16 in a holder 15 secured to the tube 9 indicates relative movement between the wheel and body. when an axial force is applied to the top or bottom of the wheel. A magnifying lens may be mounted on the tube 9 to facilitate reading the graduations 13 on the bar 11. In another embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), movement of the wheel-engaging bar (11) in the tube 9 is indicated on a graduated scale (23) secured to the tube by a pointer (24) attached to a spring- loaded roller (21) engaging the bar through an aperture in the tube.
