Abstract

Parent patent describes a method of recovering uranium from phosphate solns. which comprises solvent extn. using an organic phase contg. a pyrophosphoric acid diester (I), stripping the uranium from the organic phase using an alkaline soln., adding an uranium pptn. agent (IIe to the alkaline soln. (opt. after separating the organic phase), acidifying in the presence of the organic phase, agitating, separating the aq. and organic phases, and recycling the organic phase to the solvent extn. stage. Improvement is that the concn. of the diester in the organic phase is 0.1-0.4M. Additionally, the stabilising agent, which may be added to the organic phase is a heavy alcohol. Use of a high concn. of (I) in the organic phase favours extn. of uranium rather than iron from phospahte solns. even when a heavy alcohol is used as the stabiliser. Complete extn. of uranium from the solns. can be achieved using fewer extn. stages.
