Abstract

Appts. for sealing articles between two layers of thermoplastic film is fitted with spring-loaded carriers to accelerate the jaws for sealing and cutting the film. The jaws are connected by a piston for raising and lowering the jaws while the jaw carriage is traversed by the spring. Two such carriages may be mounted in series for gripping and sealing the leading and trailing edges of each pack respectively. Pref. the springs act via co-axial push-rods. The travel of each system is controlled by adjustable stops. Wear and tear on the conveyor system for the wrappers and their contents is reduced if the jaw speed is brought to within 10-15% of that of the conveyor before the jaw and conveyor systems are mechanically linked. Simpler thatn use of extended mechanical drive systems to derive the jaw motion directly from that of the conveyor drive system.
