Abstract

Mixt. pref. consists of particles contg. by wt. 30-80% TiB2 and 70-20% NbN; and is made into a sinterable mixt. contg. max. 40% of a binder metal, esp. Fe, Ni, Co, Mo or an alloy of these metals. The mixt. contg. the binder is pref. pressed to make a compact which is sintered in vacuo at 1450-1550 degrees C for 1/2-1 hour and cooled to room temp., esp. in N2. Compact is then pref. subjected to a second sintering operation at 1300-1700 degrees C under a pressure of 210-1760 Kg/cm2. The mixt. contg. the binder is pref. milled in a ball mill to a particle size 1 mu before pressing. The hard and wear-resistant sintered prods. obtd. can be used for tools etc. as a replacement for conventional hard materials, such as WC or diamond, which are very expensive.
