Abstract

The electrical generator provides power or acts as a transducer for spinning projectiles, typically artillery projectiles. Power is generated by the natural spin of the projectile rotating coils (9, 10) having soft iron cones (11, 12) about a pivoted central permanent magnet (7). The inertia of the system is due to a rod extension from the magnet carrying a pivot (4) at each end and side wings (6) submerged within a fluid (2) bath. The fluid, such as mercury, is chosen to provide a density match with that of the magnet assembly which can be varied by a collar (8) on its shaft. The coils are normally connected in series and are pressed or glued as an assembly into a plastic housing (5) closing off the high magnetic permeability casing (1) of the generator.
