Abstract
The entire surface of the mould, including its base, is heated to above the m.pt. of the metal, and is then filled with the metal. The filled mould is next conveyed through the crystallisation zone of a furnace, where the intensity of heating is progressively decreased in the direction of travel of the moulds; and this zone contains a chilled base used for extracting heat from the moulds. A row of moulds in pref. pushed through a furnace contg. a heating zone, followed by the crystallisation zone, which pref. uses stepwise redn. of heat during the directional solidification of the metal. The chilled base is pref. a metal box contg. cooling water.
