Abstract

A digital phase and frequency comparator is utilised in a phase locked loop circuit. Such a circuit is utilised in a clock system for a multiplexed telephone exchange to produce the local clocksignal. A phase comparator comprises two bistables (1, 2) whose outputs (Q1, Q2) are applied to gating circuits to provide comparison between trailing edges of input pulses (E1, E2). The gated outputs (UP, DW) follow the sense of the phase shift whereby pulse width is proportional to the phase shift. The output (Q) of a JK bistable (10) controls an AND-gate (11) which also receives the VCO output. An RS bistable (13) detects phase delay on the comparator output (UP) and is reset to zero buthe JK bistable output. The state is recorded by a second JK bistable (14).
