Abstract

Atmospheric pressure is measured by balancing against the height of mercury in a manometric tube. This allows a portable barometer to be produced in which the tube enters a chamber under vacuum while the base of the tube enters a reservoir open to atmospheric pressure. A chamber (1) in the form of a glass bulb contains an electrode (4) which indicates when the mercury level reaches it. The bulb is moved vertically by a line and pulley which is connected to an electromechanical counter system. The chamber communicates with a lower reservoir (3) via a stainless steel flexible tube (2). This reservoir comprises a U-tube with two arms. The flexible tube is conected to one of them while the other is open to the atmosphere. A valve is closed to define the mercury position during transport.
