Abstract
The tower has a series of enclosed cooling cells arranged about the periphery of a central opening. Each cell has a cool air inlet on its outside opposite the central opening and a warm air outlet on the inside adjacent the central opening. Each cell has a perforate fill material supported above the cool air inlet and a water spray above the fill matrial for showering cooling water downwardly through it. Fans are mounted within each cell on the inside adjacent the central opening in direct communication with the warm air outlet. Each cell has an internal wall with an apron extendin downwardly below the lowest component of the fans. The fans, water spray and perforate fill material are all protected withint he enclosed cooling cells. Counter-flow of ther air and water as well as the break-up of the water by the spray and fill material provides a high level of heat exchange. Arrangement is partic important in nuclear power plant installations.
