Abstract

Appts. for releasing pressure from a reactor used for the vaporisation of fuels in the form of dust comprises a reaction chamber having a gap in its upper portion. A cooling shield surrounds the chamber and defines a cavity about the chamber with a surrounding layer of brickwork. Sockets are located in the lower region of the appts. and extend from the appts. exterior to the cavity. The cavity communicates with the reaction chamber through the gap. The sockets are used for releasing built-up pressure and for supplying inert gas to the reactor. Used for vaporisation of brown coal, pit coal, carbonaeous residues and organic materials at pressures between 5 and 50 bar for prodn. of gases contg. H2 and CO. The pressure is released safely without excessive usage of inert gas or additional cooling or spraying water or flying slag particles. The provision of a quench tube in the appts. for indirect cooling accelerates pressure release.
