Abstract

The analyser comprises a flow-through chamber having a light source outside the chamber which directs a convergent light beam through a transparent window in the chamber wall into the chamber. A light sensitive element outside the chamber opposite a second transparent window receives light reflected from particles in the fluid. The second window is shaped as a cylinder which has its axis matched with the optical axis of the light source and serves as the walls of the flow-through chamber. The optical system of the light source is such that the point of intersection of the optical axes of the light source and light sensitive element is beyond the focus of the light source in the direction of the light flux. The solid angle of the convergent light beam is in the range O = alpha = 2 Arccos 1/n, (in which n, is the refractive index of the fluid being investigated. Granulometric analysis of particulate impurities in fuels and lubricants. The solid angle alpha is selected to ensure complete internal reflection of light from the outer walls of the cylinder. This prevents light reflected from the chamber walls being received by the light sensitive element.
