Abstract

The adjustable spanner utilises a rack (23) and pinion to displace a movable jaw (2) relative to a fixed jaw (11). The pinion rotates in a handle window (14), and the rack is cut on the base of the movable jaw. The pinion has a finger wheel and is rotated to effect jaw adjustment. It is mounted on an axle (4) which is used to actuate a lock. The axle slides axially whilst locked (5) against rotation, having opposed flats (43) locating a slotted dished washer (9) in a cup-shaped(36) end of the pinion. A finger nut (6) is rotated to pull the axle (4) towards the exterior and eventually pull the washer (9) into the cup. The opposite end of the pinion is checked by the side of the window. The washer (9) tends to expand and lock the pinion (3) on the axle, (4), obviating tendencies for the spanner to slip when leverage is applied.
