Abstract

The car steering column (11) is pivoted about a universal joint (12) to the mechanism controlling the steered wheels, and a locking device (35) locks the column in the vertical plane and at a chosen length. The locking device comprises a fixed support (15) secured to the car, and a movable support (17) secured to the steering column (11). The fixed support is formed with a curved slot (24) in which is movable a pivot (25) held in the movable support and lockable by a cam (37) operated by a lever (36). The movable support is formed with slots (26, 27) permitting sliding between the supports. The steering column has a sheath provided with holes or notches to receive the bolt of an anti-theft device. The sheath is fitted telescopically on a shaft at the base of the column (11).
