Abstract

The composite beam may comprise a mild steel bar reinforcement cage with a boarded timber soffit. It is incorporated in suspended reinforced concrete floors, and uses the timber soffit for fixing suspended ceilings. The cage is capable of elastic contraction in the lateral sense. The cage may comprise identical inverted winged 'U' section stirrups (1) to which longitudinal bars (3, 4) are welded. The soffit board (5) has a horizontally elongated rectangular section with a rebated batten (8) nailed along each top edge. Fixing is accomplished by pulling the stirrup legs towards one another, placing the cage on the board, and then releasing the legs so the wings (2) engage the grooves (6) formed by the battens.
