Abstract

The casting is made in a mould which contains >=1 core employed to form >=1 cavity in the casting, and the core is coated via hot spraying with >=1 layer which forms a coating on the metal cast in the mould after destruction of the core. The casting is pref. a cylinder head for an internal combustion engine, made in a mould contg. cores corresp. with the exhaust ports; the cores are pref. coated with a metal, and then refractory. Metal is pref. a stainless steel, whereas refractory is pref. alumina, ZRO2, Cr oxide or Zr silicate. Used for thermal insulation of exhaust ports so the cooling of the exhaust gas is reduced. It is necessary to prevent the cooling of the exhaust gas, after it leaves the exhaust valves, in order to facilitate its post-combustion so the amt. of unburnt hydrocarbons and CO entering the atmos. is reduced.
