Ajmalicine derivs. of formula (I), their acid addition and base salts and their zwitherionic forms are new. (where R is COOCH3 or COOH). (I) are made by treating tetraphyline (11)-methoxyajmalicine) with Br3B in an inert organic solvent. (I) increase arterial blood flow and reduces peripheral resistance, so are useful in treating cardio-circulating or cerebro-vascular disorders. (I;R=COOCH3) has LD50 in mice 37 mg/kg. i.v.
