Abstract

The flexible coupling for joining two shafts (1, 2) is made from two pieces of metal strip (10, 11). Each strip is bent to the form of a shallow "U" with out-turned ends (16). The two pieces are aligned at right angles to each other and bonded to rubber (15) inside a cruciform shroud (12). Each piece is bolted to an oval flange (3, 4) formed on the ends of the shafts. This type of coupling has a very high torsional rigidity but can accommodate radial and axial misalignment. It is thus particularly applicable to automobile steering columns.
