Abstract

The furnace consists of an upper chamber and a lower chamber which includes three vertical channels forming two cavities. Each cavity contains one leg of a magnetic circuit, the two circuits each surrounding the outer vertical channels in the lower chamber. Each of the two magnetic circuits consists of an inductor possessing wound coils which are fed with dephased electric current. Each magnetic circuit pref. has two o r more coils fed with electricity to obtain a flux flowing round each inductor. The lower chamber is pref. also surrounded by two auxiliary induction coils, one on each side of the bottom end of the central vertical channel and used for cleaning the latter. As compared with conventional channel furnaces using only one inductor, better control is obtd. of the induced power, the temp. of the metal, and of the speed of stirring.
