Abstract

Plane surfaces of dielectric materials, such as tiles of ceramics, silicate or concrete, are provided for decorative or protective purposes with a glass crystalline coating by a high-temp. treatment in a plasma arc. The arc length between cathode and anode exceeds the length of the treated surface. A feed mechanism moves the workpieces in a plane at right angles to the plasma arc. This ensures a continuous treatment of the entire surface by a unidirectional movement. The absence of reciprocating scanning results in a smooth surface of homogeneous structure.
