Abstract

Lamination of thermoplastic sheet to other sheet materials is effected by superficial fusion of the thermoplastic surface followed immediately by lamination to the other material. Used esp. for lamination of thin expanded polyethylene sheet to relatively impermeable films or foils for mfr of bottle closure cap linings/seals. Direct lamination avoids application of ancillary adhesives. The expanded thermoplastic sheet is more reproducible than compressed cork sheeting. Superficial fusion is effected by exposures to flames from a elongated jet which can be swung to a position remote from the film drive rolls when not required. For bonding to paper, the polyethylene surface is simply flame brushed, but for lamination to metallic foil, (aluminium or tin foil), the metallic surface is etched prior to application. The film is supported on an internally cooled roll and led at a shallow angle (tangentially) on to a laminating roll.
