Abstract

The alternator is connected to the vehicle's internal combustion engine via a step-up gear and a coupler. The alternator has a slip coupler which decouples the alternator from the engine when the engine speed exceeds a given limit. The slip coupler consists of a frequency detector connected to the output of the alternator and controlling a contact in the coupler's control circuit. Alternatively, the detector may be a voltage detector with hysteresis or it may consist of both a frequency and a voltage detector. The alternator, step-up gear and the coupler are located in the same casing.
