Abstract

The determn. of the Ca level in blood or plasma, based on the ability of EDTA to chelate Ca, and on the fact that the mechanism of blood coagulation depends on free Ca ions, comprises bonding the Ca in the blood sample to excess EDTA and then adding this mixt. to a known amt. Ca ions and coagulation accelerator, or vice versa. The process is very quick achieving a clear equivalence point in a short time, (within 5 mins.) showing whether the Ca level in the blood sample is above or below a chosen limit. The process is partic. suitable for use in on-the-spot veterinary diagnoses.
