Lubricating oils with improved lubricating properties contain (a) a minor amt. of solid particles of graphite, MoS2 and/or ZnO, and (b) a minor amt. of a copolymer of (i) an N-vinylpyrrolidone and (ii) an oil-soluble acrylate ester. The (a):(b) wt. ratio if =1:1 (esp. =1:3). Component (b) inhibits deposit (sludge, varnish, etc.) formation. Component (a) pref. comprises graphite particles with a max. transverse dimension of 1-2000 m mu, and is present in an amt. of 0.05-5 (esp. 0.1-2) wt. %. Component (b) is pref. a copolymer with a (i):(ii) molar ratio of 1:4-20 (esp. 1:5-15) and a mol. wt. of 75,000-1,500,000 (esp. 200,000-1,000,000). It is pref. present in an amt. of 2-12 (esp. 3-10)wt. %.
