Abstract

A machine for plucking poultry holds a bird against rotating brushes and rollers which pull out the feathers. The bird is first pressed down on to a pair of parallel rotating brushes which pullout the larger feathers. Fixed on an extension of the brush shaft system is a pair of parallel, spring-loaded contact, rotating rollers covered in a flexible, e.g. elastomeric, material. The bird is transferred from the brush section to be pressed against the rollers which detach the remaining, smaller feathers. In this addn., the rotating rollers are now made with a hard surface, in partic. metal and pref. stainless steel. Each roller is pref. contacted by a scraper blade to prevent feathers winding around the roller. A positive drive is pref. provided between the two rollers by shaft extensions fitted with meshing, spur gears. Hard-surfaced rollers have a much longer life than the previous, pliable-surfaced rollers. The rollers can no longer be made ineffective by being forced apart by material winding around a roller.
