Abstract

The unit is for use in the winding of uniform dia. tubes from a web of varying thickness sheet material unwound continuously from a roll and subsequently cut into successive blanks which are wound upon themselves to form the tubes. A cutter cuts the web longitudinally adjacent one edge. The cutter is mounted for movement transversely of the web. The cutter moved transversely of the web as the web is unwound from the roll. A sensor is operable to sense changes in the thickness of the sheet material. A control couples the cutter and the sensor and is responsive to sensing by the latter of a change in thickness of the sheet material to move the cutter transversely of the web in a direction as to vary the width of the material inversely with changes in its thickness.
