Abstract

The frost-protection system for solar panels used in central-heating installations utilises small-bore tubes of rubber or nylon slipped inside the main copper panel tubes. In order to compensate for buoyancy of these inner tubes a strand of lead or iron is inserted in each, before sealing inside the solar panel tubes. The weighted inner tubes float nearly vertically inside the panel tubes (usually at 60 deg. to the vertical), and therefore their lower ends touch the rear surface of the panel tubes, which is the area where freezing is initiated. The air inside the inner tubes contracts, reducing the pressure on the copper tubes. These ice-inhibiting inner tubes are normally placed in vertical tubes connecting horizontal main tubes in solar panels.
