Abstract

A double acting hydraulic jack(1) has a pressure relief device incorporated in the piston. The piston(5) is mounted on the piston rod(3) with a sliding fit and is held in position by two springs(8, 9) which act in opposite directions. In the event of an excessive pressure on the upper face of the piston, it is pushed downwards compressing the spring(9) until the upper face of the piston passes the radial hole(11) and allows oil to flow into the hole(7) to the low pressure side. The holes(6, 10) act in a similar way in the opposite direction.
