Abstract

The magnetic tape is wound onto a powered roller through a magnetic head which is located on the axis between the drive and the stock roller. The tape may be wound in either direction. The tape is allowed to pass through a vacuum chamber which is in the same place as the supply reel. The chamber is fitted with front and rear backing plate to support the tape. The tape is allowed to travel into the vacuum chamber in the form of a loop so that the travelling speed of the tape can be kept constant past the magnetic head by taking the slack in the vacuum chamber.
