Abstract

876,568. Magnetic recording machines. EPSYLON RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. Nov. 15, 1957 [June 11, 1957], No. 18342/57. Class 40 (2). [Also in Group XVI] A magnetic recording and reproducing machine employing an endless tape is characterized in that the tape control means comprise a magazine 1, in which the tape lays in random loops and which has two apertures each associated with a capstan and pinch roller assembly 2 and 3. A base-plate 6 mounted for rotation about its central axis has a central boss 7 and an eccentric roller 8. In the condition shown in Fig. 1, the tape is stored in the magazine and is driven by the capstan 3 which draws the tape from the opposite end of the magazine over the head 5. Fig. 2 shows the base-plate rotating and winding the tape on to the boss 7 and the roller 8. The base-plate 6 may be removed from the machine when the last loop has been disengaged from the magazine. To transfer the tape from the base-plate to the magazine both capstans draw the tape off the base-plate and feed it into the magazine. The speed of the capstan 2 is controlled by the speed of the capstan 3. Air jets 1a are provided to clear tape loops from the inlets. In a modification the boss 7 and roller 8 may be replaced by two rollers symmetrically disposed on either side of the centre of the base-plate.
