Abstract

The following are claimed (A) an agent for treating cotton plants before harvesting the cotton, comprising a mixt. of N-methylpyrrolidone (I) and a 2-haloethylphosphonic acid (II), (B) complexes of haloalkylphosphonic acids and amides, of formula (III). (where R is lower alkylene, X is halogen, R1-R3 are H, phenyl, naphthyl, lower alkylphenyl, or 1-24C alkyl opt. substd. by OH or halogen, or R1 is 2-16C alkenyl, or R2 and R3 together complete a 3-5C heterocyclic ring) and (C) polymers of cpds. (iii) where R1 is vinyl and R2+R3 complete a heterocyclic ring. Mixts. of (I) and (II) synergistically accelerate ripening and opening of the cotton seed capsule and simultaneously promote defoliation. Cpds. (III) and their polymer can be used as plant growth regulators, they release ethylene and can thus be used similarly to (II) for accelerating ripening, inhibiting growth, etc.
