Abstract
Preharvest treatment of Gossypium by applying a mixt. of N-methylpyrrolidone and a beta-haloethylphosphonic acid. Phosphonic acid derivs. of the formula (I) are novel, (where R = lower alkyl; X = halogen; R1, R2 and R3 = independently H, phenyl, naphthyl, lower alkylphenyl, (1-24C) alkyl opt. substd. by OH or halogen; R2 can also be (2-6C) alkenyl or NR'R2 = (3-5C) heterocyclic ring and the polymer of the compound where R1 = vinyl and NR1R2 forms a heterocyclic ring). The plant growth regulant mixt. defoliates the cotton plants and causes uniform boll opening. The two ingredients act synergistically. They are also ethylene releasing agents which control the growth of plants other than cotton.
