Abstract
Plant growth regulatory activity is displayed by mixtures of amides and haloalkylphosphonic acids and by novel compounds which are addition products of these amides and acids. Mixtures of the tertiary amide N- methyl pyrrolidone and a beta -halo ethylphosphonic acid act synergistically when applied to cotton plants prior to harvesting, leading to rapid defoliation and increased, uniform boll opening. Addition products of amides and haloalkylphosphonic acids are containing cationically charged nitrogen phosphoranyl derivatives having the structure <IMAGE> wherein R is lower alkyl; X is a halogen atom such as fluorine, chlorine bromine, or iodine; R<1>, R<2>, and R<3> are each independently hydrogen, phenyl, naphthyl, methyl or ethyl substituted phenyl, alkyl of 1 to 24 carbon atoms optionally substituted with hydroxy or halogen and R<1> can additionally be alkenyl of 2 to 6 carbon atoms; or R<2> and R<3>, together with nitrogen, can form a N- heterocyclic ring having from 3 to 5 carbon atoms, which ring may be saturated or unsaturated; and the polymer of the above compound when R<1> is vinyl and R<2> and R<3> form said N-heterocyclic ring. The polymeric compound of contains the unit <IMAGE> where n is 1 to 500. These compounds are ethylene releasing agents and can be used on various crops, including cotton as with the synergistic mixtures.
