Abstract

A locking ring (1) with an external screw thread has six equally spaced slots cut into one end face. The screw thread is cylindrical over the portion clear of the slots but is very slightly tapered over the areas between the slots. When the ring (1) is screwed into its mating part, the metal between the slots is elastically deflected due to the taper of the thread and so locks the ring in position. At the same time the cylindrical part of the thread ensures that the mating faces abut squarely against each other.
