Abstract

The parent patent described moulds etc. for use in precision foundries. In this addn. a refractory moulding mixt. (a) with improved compaction properties, and a more suitable coefft. of thermal expansion (CTE) is used. Mixt. (a) consists of coarse grains(a1), and a fine filler flour(a2), where grains(a1) and possibly also the flour(a2) are mixts. of aluminium silicates(AS) contg. more than 60 wt.% Al2O3. The pref. AS contain 60-80% Al2O3, 20-40% SiO2 and less than 3% impurities, the m.pt. being 1800-1900 degrees C, and the linear CTE being 4.5-6 x 10-6; and with open porosity below 4%. Flour(a2) may consist entirely or partly of flake alumina; and the mixt. (a) may be employed as a facing material entering into contact with the molten metal. Although the moulds described in the main patent are generally satisfactory, a mould-metal reaction was observed with some types of steel. This invention results in castings with a better surface and more accurate dimensions.
