Abstract

Oral compsn. for inhibiting dental calculus consists of (a) a cyclic polycrboxylic acid of formula (I) or their physiologically acceptable salts, and (b) an acceptable carrier. In (I), X is -CR2CR2 or O; When X is O, n = 1, R2 is COOH and R and R1 are H, CH3 or C2H5; and when X is CR2CR2, n = 0 and R2, R1 and R are H or lower alkyl. The compsns. are formulated conventionally using e.g. dental polishing agents flavourings, chewing gums or human or animal foods as carriers. (I) effectively inhibit calculus and are non-toxic, free of side-effects; relatively simple and of low mol.wt., and do not require a polymerisation process for their prodn.
