Abstract

Fires caused by metals such as alkali metals esp. Na and certain light metals Al and Mg which have ignited are extinguished by applying expanded graphite, obtd. opt. in situ, to exclude the atmos. Alkali metals used in nuclear power stations as thermal carriers which ignite can be extinguished irrespective of the type of metal and its state and the temp. of the fire. The sponge-like graphite fixes the liq. alkali metal and prevents it from flowing as well as preventing contact with the atmos. The amt. of graphite complex is surprisingly small to achieve extinction.
