Abstract

A pump is driven by solar energy, it has a flat heat exchanger panel (10) containing a medium evaporable by solar heat. The expanding vapour raises the piston of a pump (13) to drive water above the piston into a reservoir (12). At the top of its stroke the piston acts to open a valve (25) to empty the reservoir through the heat exchanger. This condenses the medium and lowers the piston thereby to suck a fresh charge of water up a well pipe (15). At the bottom of its stroke the piston closes the valve again and so initiates a fresh operating cycle.
