Abstract

Borom steels in the quenched or case-hardened and quenched condition, with improved hardness and strength due to the optimum amts. of soluble boron (Bs) and insol B(B1). The total B(Bt) and effective N2(Ne) in ppm. comply with the formula:- 10Ne-18Bt - SO= -300+200; where Bt=20-60 ppm; Ne=N-Ti/5-Zr/10, all being in ppm. and N=total N2= 40-190; Ti + Zr/2 = 100-300 ppm. and the Ti or the Zr may be zero; Ne is min. 20ppm. So is the Al equiv. and =Al + V/1.9 + Nb/3.4 + Ta/6.7 and So=100-400ppm., esp. 200-400 ppm. when Bt is 30-60 ppm. The above addns. are prepd. made after careful deoxidn. of the steel. The above ratios of B, N2, Al, plus Ti and/or Zr provide optimum hardenability.
