Abstract

Wood is treated with an aq. dispersion of a soln., in a suitable solvent medium, or a known insecticide (I) and a known fungicide (II). (I) is typically DDT, Gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (lindane), aldrin or dieldrin. (II) is typically creosote, penta- or tetra-chlorophenol, or zinc or copper naphthenates. The solvent medium may be an organic solent or it may be a non-volatile material such as a fat, natural or synthetic resin (pref. alkyd resin) or a mineral or vegetable oil. The dispersion usually also contains an emulsifying agent. There is less risk of fire, lower health hazard and better take-up by the timber of (I) and (II) than when non-aq. solns. of (I) and (II) are used.
