Abstract
A five speed gearbox has an input shaft connected by gearing to two parallel countershafts. The countershafts each have two pinions of different diameters which are free to rotate on the shafts. The pinions can be connected to the shafts by the normally disengaged selector mechanism. The output shaft is also parallel to the input shaft and carries two pinions. Each of these pinions is in engagement with one of the two free pinions. The output shaft is staggered with respect to the input shaft in the radial direction.
