Abstract

A method for producing a surface coating on a substrate is based on the application, by spraying, of a compsn. comprising (A) a film-forming polyester resin, (B) a volatile organic liq. diluent in which A is dissolved and (C) polymer microparticles in an amt. of not 3% by wt. of A+C dispersed in a stable manner in the soln. of A in B, followed by evapn. of B to give a polymer film. The polymer from which microparticles are prepd. is pref. a (co)polymer of >=1 alkyl ester of (meth)acrylic acid or is condensn. polymer. The microparticles are obtd. by dispersion polymerisation in an organic liq. in whih the polymer is insoluble, in presence of a steric stabiliser for the microparticles. The process is used to form protective and decorative coatings, esp. on motor-car bodies. Incorporation of polymer microparticles in the compsn. forming the base layer overcomes the problems caused by spraying finishing layers in to base layers (possibly pigmented) contg. polyester resins.
