Abstract

Method for recovering human albumin (I) comprises treating an aq. soln. of (I) which also contains a blood group substance with polyethyleneglycol (II) so as to ppte. protein contaminants contg. the blood group substance, then recovering (I) from the supernatant liq. The starting soln. is esp. derived from human placenta or retroplacental blood and has protein concn. 5-40 g/l (>=50% of this is albumin) and the inorganic salt concn. expressed as NaCl is =50 g/l. A pref. (II) has mean mol. wt. 2000-10000. (I) is used to treat acute haemorrhage, shock, burns protein deficiency, hyporpoteinaemia etc. It is prepd. free from blood group substances and hypotensive components so can be safely used to make solns. for infusion. The method does not require precipitants which may denature proteins nor very low temps.
