Abstract

Bung holes are generated in hollow containers by fitting a blow moulding tool with a probe having an externally threaded sleeve against which the bung thread may be formed. The probe can be rotated to disengage the thread between chilling and ejection of the moulding. The process is esp. for putting pierced or blind bung or vent holes in relatively small containers, avoiding manipulation and orientation of the moulding necessary for drilling of holes in prefabricated casks. The holes are made in zone below the upper parison pinch-off level. The probe is opt. coaxial with the gas injection needle for inflating the parison. The probe opt. incorporates arcuate cutters to sever the wall at the base of the bung passage to admit the injection needle.
