Abstract

1517414 Blow moulding SOLVAY & CIE 25 Feb 1976 [26 Feb 1975] 07416/76 Heading B5A An elongate blow moulding preform 6, having a moulded container neck 5, and a closed base 7, e.g. of hemispherical shape, is conditioned to a temperature permitting oreintation during stretching, and blow moulded into a container within a blow moulding cavity which is of longer length extent than that of the preform, by compressed air introduced into the preform through its neck and discharged therein towards its base at an angle of less than 30 degrees to the preform axes, from a location which is 20 to 60%, and preferably 30 to 50%, of the length of the preform to be inflated below the neck. During expansion, the preform base may be guided in the mould by jaws engaging its base externally or, as in the embodiment, by advance of an internal piston 8. The compressed air, is introduced either through a circular array of orifices or, as in the embodiment, through an annular slit 15 defined between a stationary sleeve 17 and the piston 8, which is simultaneously advanced so that its head 9 engages the preform base 7. The piston may be advanced by programmed mechanical, pneumatic, or hydraulic means, but in the embodiment is advanced by a double acting piston head 11, the actuating fluid of which also serves as the blowing fluid by passage through a channel 12 of the head 11 and piston 8. The preform length is preferably 0À85 to 0À15, and its cross-section 1/10 to 1/2 that of the container, and its cross-section may decrease towards its base, but is preferably cylindrical and of uniform thickness in the region to be expanded. The preform may comprise a predominantly acrylonitrile co-polymer, e.g. with methyl acrylate or styrene, or may comprise polyethylene glycol terephtalate, or isotactic polypropylene, and the container is employed for carbonated beverages.
