Abstract

La présente invention concerne la préparation de graphite activé. Selon l'invention, on met en contact une masse du graphite ayant une teneur en cendre de moins d'environ 2% en poids avec un composé soluble du platine en solution dans un milieu de solvant organique comprenant un solvant organique non-volatil de manière à déposer sur les surfaces de la masse de graphite qui sont exposées à la solution une quantité de la solution contenant au moins environ 0,004 mg de platine élémentaire par centimètre carré des surfaces; et on chauffe la masse de graphite portant le composé du platine à des températures élevées, avec arrivée d'oxygène aux surfaces exposées, de manière à éliminer le milieu de solvant organique et à décomposer le composé du platine, laissant du platine élémentaire dissémine sur les surfaces, le chauffage étant continué pendant un laps de temps suffisant pour entraîner une perte de poids d'au moins 3 % environ par rapport au poids des portions de la masse s'étendant à 1 mm au-dessous des surfaces exposées. Le graphite active obtenu est utile comme catalyseur.
