Abstract

A grating or mash (3) is used to effect a redistribution of the relative intensity in a beam of light produced by a power laser (1). The light beam leaving the laser may have a Gaussian distribution and excess light is removed from the centre of the beam to give a flat distribution. The mash (3) consists of an array of mirrors on a transparent glass sheet. Light passes through the transparent areas to the next stage of the appts. (2) and excess light is reflected, (8). The proportion of mirror to transparent areas is higher at the centre than at the edges.
