Abstract
The air intake (12) is for use in buildings susceptible to internal explosion e.g. an electricity sub-station, and absorbs the energy of an outgoing blast. The intake comprises a wall (11) opening (12) with a length of ventilation duct (13) and primarily conveys cooling air. The energy absorption properties enable the opening to be installed in relatively low position without endangering passersby. The duct has energy absorptive fittings on two parallel internal walls with the result that the air-corridor is extended. The fittings absorb heat and may comprises hollow triangular sections (17 to 20) of perforated sheet. They are mounted in staggered transverse positions on opposite walls. The sections may be filled with stainless steel wire, spiral wound, and of 0.1mm min. cross sectional area.
