Abstract

The unit is used to pick up and remove metal nodules from the sea floor. It comprises a submarine vehicle (C) equipped with a scoop (D) and an Archimedean screw conveyor (18) to transfer the nodules into an internal storage container (26). The vehicle is ballasted to float at a predetermined depth and has water turbine propulsion units to provide some movement in three planes. Gas filled spheres are emptied to compensate for the increasing weight. The scoop and screw conveyor form a rudder and can be manipulated by attached cables (24). The complete unit is under the control of a ship on the surfacE.
