Abstract
Integral, thrust unit for a nuclear propelled ship comprising a ships hull-type enclosure with a front and an upper face and containing a plant for the production of nuclear energy and means for converting this to mechanical energy for activating the propulsion elements fitted at the rear end of the thrust unit, the enclosure further comprising surfaces of contact, on its front face and on at least part of its upper face, with corresponding parts of the ship and means for fixing the thrust unit and ship together, the thrust unit also having ballast elements suitable for varying the depth at which the unit floats at the instant of the joining of the units together. Not only allows for the much higher construction and safety standard laid down for nuclear reactors, compared to those of ships e.g. oil or gas tankers, but also permits amortisation of the power plant over e.g. 20 years and of the ship in the usual 10 years.
