Abstract

Socks. stockings and half-stockings are produced from a knitted tube of short sections joined by a detachable yarn. After knitting, the tube is ironed continuously into a flat band, which may be dyed, then cut and sewn in the flat state. The continuous tube is formed of pairs of leg-shaped sections. After cutting, the pairs of shapes are sewn at the toe, whilst the two garments remain joined by the detachable thread. The sewing may take the form of heat welding or ultra-sonics. The knitted tube may become crumpled or creased during manufacture, and the ironing process provides a commercially acceptable product. The normal ironing method, applied to the finished garment, requires a lengthy manual operation which increases the cost of the item. by continuously pressing the knitted tube into a flat band, the problems of handling are eliminated, and the tube may be dyed and/or finished without further crumpling.
